NRM Eyes Kampala Comeback As 2026 Election Race Heats Up

As the road to 2026 continues to gain momentum, the ruling NRM party will need consummate political skills to win back Kampala district, the country’s capital and economic nerve centre. Historically, resistance in Kampala has posed a challenge for the NRM party.

The unpopularity of NRM in Kampala, according to some political observers, can be attributed to the government easing off on service delivery amidst rising youth unemployment, widespread corruption, poor roads and drainage systems, and issues related to the boda boda industry.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) picked up nomination forms from the Electoral Commission on behalf of its candidate, President Museveni, as he prepares to contest the 2026 presidential elections.

The forms were collected by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and Moses Kigongo, the First National Vice Chairman, on Museveni’s behalf. Other political parties, including the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), have also expressed interest, and over 100 presidential aspirants have picked up nomination forms so far.
