Uganda Cranes icon Denis Onyango has described his dramatic comeback to the national team as a “second chance,” saying his return is about combining wisdom from experience with the hunger of youthful players as Uganda gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 39-year-old shot-stopper, who stepped away from international duty in 2021, joined the team’s first training session at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, ahead of two decisive fixtures—Mozambique on Friday and Somalia next Monday.

“Coming back feels like round two for me. I’m happy, and even my club teammates celebrated the news,” Onyango shared after the session. “Some of them always hoped I’d wear the Cranes jersey again, and now it’s reality.”

Onyango’s return has sparked debate: while many fans believe his experience boosts Uganda’s chances, others argue it may overshadow the rise of younger goalkeepers such as Jamal Salim, Joel Mutakubwa, and Nafian Alionzi. The veteran, however, downplayed any tension.

“No one has a guaranteed spot. The shirt belongs to whoever is ready and performs best. The most important thing is Uganda’s victory,” he emphasized.

He lauded the younger squad members for their energy and pace but was quick to highlight that big tournaments require more than youthful legs.

“In football, you need the energy of the youngsters, but experience guides the tough moments. The balance is what wins games,” Onyango noted.

Uganda is currently fourth in Group G with nine points, trailing leaders Algeria by six. The next two games could prove decisive in determining their qualification hopes.

“We must keep believing, stay united, and fight for a common goal. At the end of the day, results are all that count,” the former skipper added.

The Cranes will host Mozambique at Namboole on Friday before heading out to face Somalia on Monday, with both fixtures carrying heavy weight for Uganda’s World Cup dream.
