Former army commander Gen Gregory  Mugisha Muntu has been officially nominated as a presidential candidate in Uganda’s upcoming 2026 general elections, becoming the fourth contender to enter the race.

Muntu, who leads the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party, arrived at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala early Thursday and successfully completed the nomination process. His candidacy adds to a growing list of presidential aspirants challenging President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has held power since 1986.

He now joins President Museveni, businessman Elton Joseph Mabirizi, and FDC candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi, who were nominated earlier in the week.

A former president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and one of Uganda’s most recognizable opposition figures, Muntu brings decades of political and military experience to a competitive election field.
