The much-anticipated race for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) First National Vice Chairperson (Female) has opened with Speaker of Parliament Anita Among taking a commanding early lead over her rival, former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
Preliminary tallies from West Nile districts show Among sweeping district after district with clean margins. In Zombo, she secured 66–0, followed by Nebbi at 117–0, Pakwach with 60–0, and Moyo at 67–0. Reports also indicate strong support for her in Yumbe. Kadaga is yet to register a single vote in the region.
The contest follows tense exchanges between the two leaders during last weekend’s NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting at State House, highlighting the high stakes of this internal power struggle.
Junior Energy Minister Phiona Nyamutoro, who is also eyeing the Zombo Woman MP seat, was seen celebrating the results, signaling strong grassroots enthusiasm for Among’s candidacy. Delegates in the Alur sub-region appear to have thrown their weight firmly behind the Speaker.
As the tallying continues, all eyes remain on whether Kadaga can recover ground in other regions or if Among’s West Nile sweep sets the tone for the rest of the contest.
