The Chief of Defence Forces in the UPDF, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has said he will protect former Leader of Opposition and leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mathias Mpuuga.
“Mpuuga is someone I respect and want to work with. No one will touch him. I look forward to working with him,” Gen Muhoozi posted on X.
The comments come at a time when Mpuuga, who bitterly left the National Unity Platform, on whose ticket he was elected to Parliament in 2021.
He would later form his own Democratic Alliance, which he said seeks to capture power in Uganda.
Previously, the Chief of Defence Forces has expressed his admiration for Mpuuga.
“This gentleman is presidential material. He is an impressive politician,” Gen Muhoozi said in December last year.
The comments about Mpuuga have left many, especially in the opposition National Unity Platform, with tongues wagging on the next move for their former vice president for Buganda and Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
It remains to be seen what the flattery of Mathias Mpuuga would lead to in the future, but it is expected to further escalate the bad blood between him and the other opposition political parties.
