Fort Portal — Joseph Mugenyi has been officially nominated as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Burahya County after winning the party primaries with 23,513 votes, representing 50.6 percent of the total ballots cast.

Mugenyi, who addressed a press conference at Fort Fun City shortly after his nomination, thanked the NRM members for their support and promised to focus his campaign on youth empowerment and constituency development.

“This nomination is a call to serve,” Mugenyi told journalists. “We must give young people opportunities to thrive and ensure that development reaches every household in Burahya.”

His closest rival in the primaries, Richard Rwabuhinga, the Kabarole District LCV Chairperson, polled 14,916 votes and has since announced he will contest as an independent candidate.

Mugenyi’s nomination sets the stage for what is expected to be a competitive race in Burahya County ahead of the 2026 general elections. However, political observers note that Mugenyi’s strong showing in the primaries consolidates his support within the ruling party’s structures in Kabarole District.

Meanwhile, Mwanguhya Charles Mpagi, who contested in the previous elections, has not offered himself again as an independent candidate.

The press event drew NRM supporters, local leaders, and members of the media, marking the official start of Mugenyi’s campaign under the party banner.
