The National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) has flagged a total of 10,518 national ID applications due to suspected falsified information, an offence punishable under Ugandan law.

Claire Ollama, the NIRA Registrar for Buikwe District, made the announcement during a press conference held at Naguru Police Headquarters in Kampala. She emphasised that the flagged applications are part of the ongoing mass enrollment and renewal exercise that began on May 27, 2025, during which more than 2.5 million Ugandans have renewed their national identity cards.

Ollama revealed that many individuals attempting to renew their IDs are seeking to alter personal details they initially provided falsely during earlier registration phases. She warned that providing false information is illegal under the Uganda Registration of Persons Act and can lead to serious consequences.

“We urge the public to provide accurate and truthful information during the registration process. If anyone needs to change their particulars, they should follow the legal procedures set by the Authority,” she said.

Ollama also advised parents and guardians to accompany their children to the registration centers, rather than leaving them unattended in long queues. For first-time applicants, she stressed the importance of bringing essential documents, including a letter from the Local Council (LC), proof of citizenship, and information on both maternal and paternal lineage to verify ancestry.

On the issue of corruption, Ollama issued a stern warning: “The entire process is free of charge. Anyone who gives money to registrars or solicits bribes will face arrest and prosecution.”

She concluded by encouraging all Ugandans to participate in the exercise responsibly and within the confines of the law.
