The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has voiced deep concern over the increasing number of road accidents across the country, stressing the urgent need to prioritise road safety.
In her communication to Parliament this afternoon, the Speaker reported on a tragic motor accident that occurred in Kigorobya, Buliisa District, where 20 traders lost their lives and several others were injured last evening.
She called for immediate and decisive action to prevent such tragedies, emphasising the need to work toward building safer and more reliable road infrastructure nationwide.
Citing alarming statistics, the Speaker noted that more than 25,000 road crashes were recorded last year alone—figures she said underscore the seriousness of the crisis.
She urged all relevant stakeholders to take collective responsibility in addressing road safety challenges and called on the government to urgently improve the country’s road infrastructure.
In addition, the Speaker issued a caution to school owners, urging them to prioritise student safety.
Her remarks follow a recent incident in Mukono District, where a student tragically drowned while at school.
